Elon Musk’s SpaceX has announced plans to build a massive $100 billion spaceport in Louisiana, United States, as the company prepares to significantly expand its Starship launch operations.
The facility, known as Starbase Louisiana, is expected to be built in Vermilion Parish, about 185 kilometres west of New Orleans.
SpaceX said construction is scheduled to begin next year, with the project expected to create more than 3,000 jobs in the region.
Spaceport To Support Thousands Of Starship Flights
According to SpaceX, the planned facility will go far beyond conventional launch pads.
The company said it will include the infrastructure required to support thousands of Starship flights every year, with the first launches from the Louisiana site expected in 2029.
Musk said the facility could eventually feature more than a dozen launch towers capable of supporting over 30 Starship flights per day.
If achieved, that would make the site one of the busiest launch facilities in the world.
SpaceX Targets Moon And Mars Missions
Starship is SpaceX’s giant reusable rocket currently under development at the company’s existing Starbase facility in Texas.
The spacecraft is being designed to carry out missions beyond Earth, including planned journeys to the Moon and eventually Mars.
SpaceX said its Louisiana investment would help establish the infrastructure needed for its long-term vision of making frequent spaceflight possible.
Thousands Of Jobs Expected
The Louisiana Economic Development agency said the project could bring significant economic benefits to the region.
SpaceX said more than 3,000 new jobs would be created, while the average salary at the facility is expected to be substantially higher than the current average wage in the area.
The company also said it plans to take measures to protect the Louisiana coastline and local wildlife during the development of the project.
Environmental Concerns Remain
The proposed spaceport is also expected to face environmental scrutiny.
Louisiana has experienced severe coastal wetland loss over the years, with environmental groups already raising concerns about industrial development and space activities.
SpaceX has faced similar opposition at its Texas Starbase, which is located near protected areas.
Despite the concerns, the company says the Louisiana project will play a major role in its ambition to dramatically increase Starship launches and support future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
