Tanzania Post-Election Unrest Spills into Kenya as Police Fire Tear Gas over Border

Post-election violence in Tanzania has spread into Kenya’s border communities, as Kenyan police fired tear gas on Friday to disperse protesters attempting to cross into Taveta and Namanga.

Eyewitnesses said dozens of Tanzanian protesters, fleeing clashes with their country’s security forces, tried to seek refuge on the Kenyan side but were repelled by riot police.

The Kenyan Interior Ministry confirmed that it had tightened security along the border, citing fears that the unrest could destabilise local economies and displace thousands.

Traders in the Loitokitok and Taveta border markets reported closure of businesses due to tear gas and sporadic gunfire. Residents say cross-border movement has been suspended since Thursday night.

The Tanzanian election crisis has drawn regional concern, with the East African Community (EAC) urging dialogue and restraint. Analysts warn that if not resolved quickly, the turmoil could disrupt trade and inflame ethnic tensions across the Great Lakes region.
