TINUBU CONFERS NATIONAL HONOURS ON 50 DEMOCRACY HEROES

President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on 50 distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their contributions to the struggle for democracy and opposition to military rule in the country.

The honours were announced during the President’s Democracy Day address on June 12, a date widely regarded as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey. President Tinubu paid tribute to journalists, civil rights advocates, political leaders, and military officers who risked their freedom, careers, and, in some cases, their lives in the campaign to restore democratic governance after years of military dictatorship.

The award recipients include prominent pro-democracy activists, media practitioners, and former military officers who played key roles in resisting authoritarian rule and advocating for democratic reforms. Among those honoured are former National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki, veteran journalist and public affairs commentator Dele Alake, political activist Joe Igbokwe, civil rights campaigner Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, and several others who were active during the pro-democracy movement that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

President Tinubu described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history, saying it represents far more than an election. According to him, the sacrifices made by democracy advocates helped lay the foundation for the freedoms and democratic institutions Nigerians enjoy today.

The President noted that many of the honourees endured imprisonment, harassment, exile, detention, and other forms of persecution while fighting for democratic governance. He stressed that their courage and resilience helped preserve the democratic ideals that continue to guide the nation.
Tinubu further challenged Nigerians to build on the legacy of the June 12 heroes by strengthening democratic institutions, promoting accountability, and creating opportunities that improve the lives of citizens. He said while previous generations secured independence and democracy, the responsibility of the current generation is to achieve economic prosperity and inclusive development.

The President also reflected on the significance of the June 12, 1993 election, describing it as a powerful demonstration of national unity and a vision of a more inclusive Nigeria. He said the heroes of the democracy struggle secured political freedom, while today’s leaders must focus on ensuring economic freedom and shared prosperity for all Nigerians.

A detailed breakdown of the national honours and award categories conferred on each recipient is expected to be released by the Federal Government in the coming days.
