Seven miners have died after a mining pit collapsed at Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 7pm on Wednesday while the miners were reportedly working at the site.
Residents said the sudden collapse trapped the miners underground, prompting fellow workers and members of the community to rush to the scene and begin rescue efforts.
According to community member Albert Danlami, the miners were carrying out their normal activities when the ground suddenly gave way.
The collapse caused panic in the community as residents gathered at the mining site in an attempt to rescue those trapped beneath the earth.
Some people were also reportedly injured in the incident.
Seven Miners Confirmed Dead
The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed that seven miners lost their lives.
He said the victims were at the mining site when the pit collapsed and that rescue efforts were launched immediately after the incident.
However, the trapped miners were eventually found dead.
The deaths have plunged Kassa community into mourning, with residents describing the incident as a devastating loss.
Residents Demand Government Action
Community members have called on the Plateau State Government and relevant mining authorities to take urgent action to improve safety at mining sites across Barkin Ladi.
Timothy Bako, a resident, expressed grief over the deaths and said many miners were working in dangerous conditions without adequate safety equipment.
He urged the government to regulate mining operations more effectively and ensure that operators comply with safety standards.
Another resident, who requested anonymity, said miners often work without proper support structures or protective equipment, leaving them vulnerable to accidents.
The resident called for government intervention and greater involvement of mining experts to prevent similar tragedies.
Community leaders are also appealing for immediate assistance for the families of the deceased while urging authorities to strengthen safety regulations and enforcement across mining sites in the area.
