The United States Embassy and the United States Consulate General will remain closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced the temporary closure through its official communication channels, explaining that Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday of May to honour American military personnel who lost their lives while serving their country.
According to the mission, routine consular operations, including visa appointments, passport services, and assistance for American citizens, will not be available during the holiday.
Applicants and visitors with scheduled appointments at the embassy in Abuja or the consulate in Lagos have been advised to check official platforms for updates regarding possible rescheduling or further guidance.
The mission stated that normal diplomatic and consular activities are expected to resume on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
Memorial Day is widely commemorated across the United States with ceremonies, wreath-laying events, and tributes dedicated to fallen service members.
