UPDATE: FG to begin 90,000km fibre optic rollout within weeks

The Federal Government has announced that the rollout of a 90,000-kilometre national fibre optic network will begin within the next few weeks as part of efforts to expand broadband access and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, after briefing President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday.

Project ready for deployment

According to the minister, all funding arrangements and contractual processes for the nationwide project have been completed, clearing the way for construction to commence.

“In a few weeks, Nigerians will begin to see us laying fibre across the country. This project will transform Nigeria for good,” Tijani said.

Nationwide broadband expansion

Tijani said the fibre optic network will extend to all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, every geopolitical zone, 774 local government areas, and wards across the country.

The project is expected to significantly improve internet speed, expand broadband coverage, reduce connectivity gaps and support Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

Sector contribution rises

The minister also credited recent reforms by the Tinubu administration for strengthening the telecommunications sector.

He cited the designation of digital infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure, tariff adjustments and tax harmonisation as measures that have boosted investment and growth.

According to him, the sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased from between 16 and 18 per cent to nearly 21 per cent since the current administration assumed office.

3,700 telecom towers coming

Beyond the fibre project, Tijani announced that the Federal Government will begin deploying about 3,700 telecommunications towers from October 2026.

The towers are expected to provide mobile network coverage for more than 20 million Nigerians living in underserved and unserved communities.

New postcode system launches October 1

The minister also revealed that Nigeria will officially launch a new alphanumeric postcode system on October 1, 2026.

Under the initiative, every property in the country will receive a unique address, a move expected to improve e-commerce, emergency response, security, logistics and public service delivery.

The combined initiatives form part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand connectivity and drive inclusive economic growth.
