Civil servants under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have commenced an indefinite strike, shutting down operations across departments, agencies and area councils in Abuja over unpaid promotion arrears, wage awards, delayed promotions and a litany of unresolved welfare issues. The industrial action, directed by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), began after workers’ seven-day ultimatum to FCTA management expired without satisfactory responses to their demands. The unions said the strike will continue until all outstanding entitlements, including unpaid wage awards, promotion arrears, pension and National Housing Fund deductions are fully addressed. They also raised concerns about the non-remittance of statutory deductions and poor working conditions, accusing the administration of neglecting staff welfare and allowing a “mass failure” in the 2024 promotion examinations that affected a large percentage of candidates. The move is expected to disrupt official services across the FCT’s secretariats, departments and agencies until the government engages meaningfully with labour leaders to resolve the disputes.
