NNPP Suffers Defection as Jigawa Lawmaker joins APC

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has suffered another setback as Yusuf Shittu Galambi, the lawmaker representing Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Galambi’s defection, announced on Thursday, makes him the first NNPP member in the House of Representatives to switch to APC. His departure is part of a growing trend, with at least 11 opposition lawmakers having moved to the ruling party in the last six months.

Explaining his decision, Galambi cited the “deep-seated internal crisis” within the NNPP, pointing to persistent legal battles and leadership disputes that have divided the party. He revealed that his constituents had urged him to leave the party, expressing their dissatisfaction with the way it was being run.

The NNPP has been embroiled in leadership struggles, with expelled founding members contesting the authority of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s loyalists, leading to factional divisions. This internal turmoil has weakened the party’s influence and led to defections at both the state and federal levels.

With Galambi’s exit, the APC further strengthens its majority in the House of Representatives, consolidating its hold on Nigeria’s political landscape.
