The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, has raised concerns that the proposed Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill 2024 could eliminate the agency’s role.
Speaking at a public hearing organized by the House Committee on Finance, Adeniyi highlighted conflicts between the new bill and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, warning that the bill’s definition of “tax” to include duties could strip Customs of its responsibilities. He also pointed out jurisdictional overlaps in Sections 23, 29, and 41 of the Joint Revenue Board Bill.
He urged lawmakers to amend the bill, advocating for collaboration between Customs and tax authorities rather than abolishing existing structures.
