Zulum Moves Against Absentee Traditional Leaders, Orders Immediate Sackings in Borno

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has ordered the immediate suspension and removal of all village and ward heads in Malam Fatori, the headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area, accusing them of being absent from their communities as displaced residents return home.

Zulum issued the directive on Monday during a working visit to the border community, where he described the absence of the traditional leaders as unacceptable, particularly at a time when residents are returning after years of insurgency.

The governor said traditional rulers have an important role to play in restoring stability to communities emerging from conflict.

According to him, their physical presence is crucial for maintaining communication between residents and government, strengthening community resilience and providing leadership for returning families.

New Traditional Leaders to Be Appointed

Zulum directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, to work with the Shehu of Borno to immediately begin the process of appointing replacements.

He said the new village and ward heads must be people of proven integrity and competence who are prepared to work closely with government and security agencies to promote peace and development.

Zulum Orders Reconstruction of Malam Fatori

The governor also announced plans to accelerate the reconstruction of critical infrastructure destroyed during years of insurgency.

Accompanied by senior government officials and lawmakers, including Senate Chief Whip Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Zulum inspected damaged schools, government buildings and residential facilities in the community.

He subsequently ordered the immediate construction of a primary school, secondary school, Islamiyya school and local hospital.

The governor said providing basic amenities would be essential to encouraging displaced residents to settle permanently, rebuild their livelihoods and restore normal life.

Residents Get Direct Access to Governor

During the visit, Zulum also met with residents to hear firsthand about the challenges they face as they return to their ancestral homes.

The latest measures form part of the Borno government’s broader effort to rebuild communities affected by insurgency and create the conditions necessary for sustainable resettlement.

With traditional leadership now being overhauled and reconstruction projects set to begin, Malam Fatori is entering a new phase in its difficult journey from conflict to recovery.
