Tension in Senate as Akpoti- Uduaghan’s Files Petition

Tensions flared in the Senate on Tuesday March 4th as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan attempted to submit a petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, sparking strong opposition from fellow lawmakers.

The move triggered an intense standoff among lawmakers, with objections raised over its validity.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had previously spoken about the allegations in a media interview, sought to present the petition under Senate Order 40. However, her effort was immediately challenged by Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno, who argued that the matter was already before the courts and, therefore, could not be debated in the Senate. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele reinforced this stance, asserting that the petition did not meet procedural requirements.

Despite her insistence that the court case in question was unrelated to her allegations against Akpabio, the disagreement escalated. The session briefly descended into disorder before a closed-door meeting was called to contain the situation. With tensions running high, the fate of the petition remains uncertain
