Lawmakers no Move to Protect Domestically Workers

The House of Representatives has taken a historic step toward protecting Nigeria’s domestic workers by passing the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights for a second reading.

Sponsored by Rep. Akin Alabi (APC, Oyo), the bill seeks to establish fair wages, social security benefits, and legal protections for domestic workers. It also mandates written employment contracts and safeguards against abuse and exploitation.

If passed into law, the bill would bring Nigeria in line with global labor standards, including the International Labour Organization’s Convention 189 on decent work for domestic workers.

The legislation has sparked bipartisan debate in the House, with lawmakers highlighting the urgent need to safeguard the rights and welfare of domestic workers across the country.
