VETERAN JOURNALIST YOMI ODUNUGA NAMED MEDIA ADVISER TO SGF GEORGE AKUME

In a move that underscores the strategic importance of experienced media hands in governance communication, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has appointed seasoned journalist and columnist, Yomi Odunuga, as his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
A statement issued on Thursday July 10th confirmed that the appointment takes immediate effect.
Odunuga, a veteran journalist with more than 27 years in the media industry, was until his latest appointment a Deputy Editor at The Nation Newspaper, where he was known for his analytical columns and high-profile interviews.
Born on June 2, 1966, Odunuga’s career began with The PUNCH newspaper, where he gained prominence as State House Correspondent. His influential columns—“Life in Abuja” and the widely followed “Inside Aso Rock”—offered readers vivid, behind-the-scenes insights into Nigeria’s power circles, particularly during the tense political years of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Over the years, Odunuga rose through the ranks to become Abuja Bureau Chief and eventually Group Political Editor at The PUNCH before moving to The Nation as Assistant Editor and Abuja Bureau Chief.
In 2019, he entered government service as the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, where he was widely regarded for his strategic messaging and media outreach.
Following his stint in government, Odunuga returned to The Nation, where he resumed writing high-impact commentary and conducting exclusive interviews that shaped political discourse.
A multi-talented media figure, Odunuga is also a poet, lyricist, and public affairs analyst whose deep understanding of governance and politics has earned him wide respect across party lines.
With his appointment as media adviser to Senator Akume, Odunuga is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the SGF’s communications strategy at a time when the Tinubu administration is driving major reforms across the civil service, tax systems, and national development initiatives.
