A civil society coalition has cautioned the European Union and other foreign actors to desist from interfering in Nigeria’s electoral processes, arguing that such involvement can undermine sovereignty and local legitimacy.
The group, which includes legal and election observers, demanded that foreign agencies operate transparently, respect Nigeria’s laws, and coordinate closely with INEC rather than unilaterally engage citizens or political actors.
They asserted that support for democracy should come through capacity building and oversight, not by influencing outcomes or funding partisan activities. The group warned that perceptions of foreign meddling could erode public trust and spark backlash
