Vp Shettima and Sultan Kalu back Gender inclusion, call for more Women in Parliament

Vice President Kashim Shettima and prominent traditional ruler Sultan Muhammad Kalu have jointly called for greater representation of women in Nigeria’s legislative bodies. Speaking at separate events, both lauded the increasing involvement of women in politics and urged that gender inclusion become a fundamental criterion in party nominations.

The Vice President stated that women bring unique perspectives and balances to governance and should no longer be sidelined in decision-making roles. Meanwhile, Sultan Kalu, as a custodian of culture, emphasized that tradition should not be an obstacle to women’s political participation, but rather a pathway to harness their leadership potential.

Their statements come against the backdrop of ongoing debates over electoral reforms and affirmative action policies aimed at ensuring equitable representation in federal and state legislatures. Both called on political parties to adopt internal quotas and mentorship programs that groom women candidates for higher office.

The duo’s public backing is expected to add momentum to civil society campaigns pressing the National Assembly to adopt legislation mandating a minimum percentage of women in elected positions.
