Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has made a controversial assertion by describing “Yahoo boys” (internet fraudsters) as possessing genius capacity and arguing that they deserve constructive interventions rather than blanket condemnation. Obi’s remarks have stirred public debate on ethics, youth prospects, and security.
Speaking at a youth forum, Obi said many of those involved in online fraud operate with technological skill and entrepreneurial savvy, but their talents are strained by limited opportunities, corruption, and skewed incentive structures. He urged the government to channel their energy into legitimate sectors like fintech, creative tech and digital services.
While some applauded his nuanced perspective, others sharply criticized him for appearing to romanticize illicit activity, undermining the rule of law and neglecting victims’ rights. Social media lit up with mixed reactions, reflecting deep tensions over governance, youth alienation, and moral accountability in Nigeria’s youth ecosystem.
