CHAOS IN PARTY PRIMARIES RAISES 2027 ELECTION CONCERNS ACROSS NIGERIA

As Nigeria’s political parties conclude their primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, widespread allegations of irregularities, violence, imposition of candidates and vote-buying have deepened concerns about the credibility of the electoral process.

Across major parties including the APC, PDP, Labour Party, ADC and others, stakeholders have reported cases of manipulation, consensus abuse and disputed results. Several aspirants have rejected outcomes, citing exclusion, interference by governors and powerful political actors, while others have resigned or defected in protest.

In states such as Adamawa, Kwara, Gombe, Yobe and Nasarawa, reports suggest intense rivalry between governors and external political forces, with some candidates imposed while others were forced out through pressure or inducements.

There are also claims of financial inducements ranging from cash offers to political appointments, allegedly used to secure withdrawals of aspirants in several constituencies.

The PDP itself remains divided, with one faction backing Senator Sandy Onor while another faction is expected to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate amid ongoing internal disputes.

Analysts say the controversies highlight weak internal democracy and poor enforcement of electoral guidelines, warning that unresolved disputes could affect party unity ahead of 2027.

INEC has also been drawn into the debate, with some experts arguing that the commission should have stronger powers to reject flawed primaries, while others insist it should remain only an observer.

Political observers warn that unless reforms are urgently implemented, the recurring crises in party primaries could further weaken public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.
