Death of a General: New Revelations Emerge on Major General Rabe Abubakar’s Final Days in Bandit Captivity

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who died while being held captive by bandits in Katsina State. The new revelations, largely based on accounts reportedly given by his widow, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, provide a clearer picture of the suffering endured by the couple during their days in captivity and raise new questions about the circumstances that led to the General’s death.

Major General Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Their driver survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot wounds. The kidnapping shocked Nigerians, given the General’s distinguished military career and years of service to the nation.

For weeks, conflicting reports circulated regarding the conditions of their captivity, the cause of the General’s death, and the eventual rescue of his wife. However, sources who reportedly spoke with Mrs. Abubakar while she was receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Katsina revealed that the retired General may have died after suffering complications from a suspected snake bite while in captivity.

According to the accounts, Mrs. Abubakar noticed swelling in her husband’s leg and alerted their captors. The bandits allegedly informed her that he had been bitten by a snake and attempted to treat him using traditional herbal remedies. Despite these efforts, his condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly. Witness accounts suggest that the retired General eventually died in his wife’s arms deep inside the forest hideout where they were being held.

His death reportedly threw the kidnappers into panic. Fearing an imminent military assault, the bandits hurriedly prepared to abandon their camp. Mrs. Abubakar was allegedly placed on a motorcycle and transported through the forest as the criminals attempted to evade advancing security forces.

During the chaotic escape, the kidnappers reportedly became disoriented after hearing gunfire in the distance. As the convoy scattered, the bandit transporting Mrs. Abubakar allegedly abandoned her and shot her in the thigh before fleeing. The injured widow was left bleeding heavily and unable to move.

According to sources familiar with her account, a local resident from a nearby settlement discovered her lying helpless in the bush. Moments later, soldiers conducting search-and-rescue operations arrived at the location. The troops reportedly evacuated her using a makeshift stretcher before transferring her for urgent medical treatment.

The successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar was later confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, which credited troops of Operation Fansan Yamma for the rescue effort. Military authorities stated that sustained pressure from security forces forced the kidnappers to flee and abandon their captive.

The death of Major General Abubakar has triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria. Security experts, retired military officers, and public figures have described the incident as a painful reflection of the country’s persistent insecurity challenges.

Former Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), described the tragedy as evidence of the alarming scale of terrorism and banditry confronting the nation. He said the killing highlighted the urgent need for stronger national unity and a more determined security response.

Security analyst Kabiru Adamu also described the incident as a significant national security failure. According to him, the abduction and death of a retired senior military officer should be treated as an attack on the authority and sovereignty of the Nigerian state. He called for comprehensive investigations into possible intelligence failures and security lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Meanwhile, security agencies are reportedly investigating how the kidnappers became aware of an impending military offensive against their hideout. Sources suggest authorities are examining whether information regarding the rescue operation may have been leaked before troops moved into the area.

Investigators are also working to dismantle the criminal network believed to be responsible for the abduction. Intelligence reports have linked the operation to a notorious bandit syndicate operating across Katsina, Kano, and neighbouring states, known for carrying out mass kidnappings and demanding large ransoms.

The death of Major General Rabe Abubakar has renewed calls for a more aggressive and coordinated national strategy against banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. Many Nigerians argue that if a retired General with extensive security experience could fall victim to such criminals, then ordinary citizens remain even more vulnerable.

As the nation mourns one of its distinguished military officers, attention is now focused on ensuring justice for the deceased, supporting his family, and intensifying efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the security challenges facing Nigeria and the urgent need for lasting solutions to restore public confidence and national safety.
