Defence Minister urges New Service Chiefs to Synergise against Insecurity

The Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, has called on Nigeria’s newly appointed Service Chiefs to cooperate closely and adopt a coordinated strategy in the fight against insecurity and to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

Badaru made the plea during a maiden courtesy meeting at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, where the new leadership of the Armed Forces—Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede (Chief of Defence Staff), Maj. Gen. W. Shaibu (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral I. Abbas (Chief of Naval Staff), and Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke (Chief of Air Staff)—were present.

In an official statement from his office, the minister emphasised that unity and trust among the military branches are essential to confronting Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges. “We must work as one team, guided by a well-coordinated strategy to safeguard our sovereignty and advance national security priorities,” he said.

He also noted that the visit came a day after President Bola Tinubu held closed-door talks with the new chiefs at the Presidential Villa, urging them to demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and a renewed commitment to defending the nation.

Observers see Badaru’s directive as a timely reinforcement of the executive’s expectation for seamless collaboration and decisive action in Nigeria’s security architecture.
