The House of Representatives has resolved to launch a probe into alleged mismanagement of $25 million in grants received by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The motion, titled “Need to Stop Further Misuse of FIFA and CAF Grants by the Nigerian Football Federation,” was moved by Hon. Adedayo Adesola (APC, Lagos) and co-sponsored by Hon. Felix Nwaeke (PDP, Rivers). In his submission, Adesola raised concerns that despite substantial funding from international football bodies over the years, Nigeria’s national teams have not shown corresponding improvement in performance or infrastructure development.
The House will summon NFF executives to appear before its Committee on Sports, requiring them to present detailed receipts, expenditure reports, and audit documents from 2015 to date. Adesola highlighted a prior audit query in 2016 regarding $1.1 million in development funds — of which $802,000 was reportedly undocumented. He also cited the controversial $1.2 million expenditure on the Birnin Kebbi Mini Stadium, noting that the facility appears substandard for the amount claimed.
Following adoption of the motion, the House adopted a resolution to constitute a special investigative committee to scrutinize NFF’s financial operations and ensure accountability. The committee is empowered to call witnesses, inspect infrastructure projects, and make recommendations for sanctions if wrongdoing is established.
Civil society groups, football stakeholders, and fans have welcomed the decision, signalling growing demand for transparency and good governance in the administration of football in Nigeria.
