Senator Ireti Kingibe.
The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has called for a thorough, transparent, and accountable investigation into the death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corps member reportedly killed in an incident involving personnel of the Nigerian Army.
In a statement issued on Monday, the senator expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing the loss as heartbreaking, avoidable, and a painful reminder of the need for greater professionalism during security operations.
Kingibe said she was deeply saddened by the death of the young Nigerian, noting that his passing while serving the country under the National Youth Service Corps had caused national grief.
She stated that while preliminary reports suggested the shooting may have been accidental, the outcome remained devastating and irreversible.
According to the senator, the incident highlights the fragility of life and the urgent need for heightened caution, discipline, and professionalism by security personnel in the discharge of their duties.
Condolences to Family
Kingibe extended her condolences to the parents, relatives, and loved ones of the deceased, saying no family should have to endure the pain of losing a child under such tragic circumstances.
She noted that the grief of losing a young person serving the nation is unimaginable and said the country shares in the family’s sorrow.
The senator stressed that corps members, who dedicate a year of national service to the country, deserve adequate protection wherever they are posted.
Call for Transparent Investigation
While acknowledging the Nigerian Army’s initial response to the incident, Kingibe said immediate reactions alone were not enough.
She insisted that there must be a full and transparent investigation to determine exactly what happened, ensure accountability where necessary, and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
According to her, justice must be served and lessons must be learned from the incident.
Her call adds to growing public concern over the circumstances surrounding the death and the need for clear answers from relevant authorities.
Wider Concerns Over Corps Member Safety
The senator also used the incident to draw attention to broader concerns regarding the safety of young Nigerians, particularly members of the NYSC scheme.
She said the tragedy underscores the urgent need to strengthen rules of engagement for security forces, improve coordination between security agencies and civilians, and ensure corps members are protected at all times.
Kingibe warned that preventable incidents of this nature must never be allowed to happen again.
Push for Reforms
Reaffirming her commitment to legislative oversight and public safety, the senator pledged to engage relevant authorities and institutions to push for reforms that prioritise the security of citizens.
She said restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions would require accountability, professionalism, and clear safeguards for civilians.
Growing Public Attention
The death of Abdulsamad Jamiu has drawn sympathy and concern from many Nigerians, especially given his status as a corps member serving the nation.
The incident is expected to intensify conversations about civilian safety during military and security operations, as well as the responsibilities of institutions charged with protecting lives.
As calls for justice continue, attention is now focused on the outcome of any official investigation and whether reforms will follow.
