A fresh wave of violence has hit Plateau State following the killing of a former councillor, Hon. Daniel Danjuma Chong, during a late-night attack on Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area.
The deceased, popularly known as Hon. Star, previously represented Rim Ward in the Riyom Legislative Council. According to local sources, the gunmen stormed Torok village in Rim community at about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, opening fire and causing panic among residents.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, who described the attack as another tragic loss for the community.
According to the association, the assailants invaded the village while shooting sporadically before fleeing the scene. BYM also alleged that another resident, David Dachollom Danjuma, sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the attack.
The group condemned the killing and called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to launch a thorough investigation, apprehend those responsible, and ensure justice for the victims.
Expressing condolences to the family of Hon. Chong and the people of Torok community, the association said the continued attacks on innocent residents remain unacceptable and urged authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent further bloodshed.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alabo Alfred, had not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
