The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced September 19, 2026, as the date for the bye-election to fill the vacant Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
The election became necessary following the death of Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who previously represented the constituency.
INEC announced the date in a statement signed by its Public Affairs Officer, Mohorret Bigun, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner.
The commission said the election would be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the Electoral Act.
INEC Releases Election Timetable
According to the timetable released by the commission, the Notice of Election will be published on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Political parties interested in contesting the seat are expected to conduct their primaries between August 21 and August 25.
INEC will then publish the final list of candidates on September 8, after which campaigns will officially begin on September 9.
Campaign activities are expected to end on September 17, two days before voters head to the polls.
903 Polling Units To Be Covered
INEC said it is prepared to conduct the election across 903 polling units, 31 Registration Areas and three Local Government Areas within the federal constituency.
The electoral commission urged all political parties and candidates to strictly follow the approved timetable and ensure that their activities comply with existing electoral laws.
INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to providing a level playing field for all participating parties and delivering a free, fair and inclusive election.
The September 19 poll will determine who succeeds the late Yaya Bauchi Tongo as the representative of the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
