Mass protests erupt in South Africa over U.S. military Strikes in Venezuela

Scores of activists and members of various political organizations gathered in Pretoria on Thursday, January 8, 2026, to stage a demonstration condemning recent United States military actions against Venezuela. The protest, held outside the U.S. Embassy, saw demonstrators demanding an immediate end to foreign intervention and what they described as an assault on the sovereignty of the South American nation.

The demonstration was organized by a coalition of South African leftist groups and trade unions who view the U.S. aggression as an act of “imperialist bullying.” Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans calling for peace and the respect of international law, arguing that the people of Venezuela should be allowed to determine their own political future without external military pressure. The gathering served as a platform to voice solidarity with the Venezuelan government and to criticize the Biden administration’s intensified foreign policy maneuvers in the region.

The protest was carried out through a peaceful march and a formal picket, during which leaders of the movement delivered a memorandum of protest to embassy officials. By taking to the streets, the organizers aimed to pressure the South African government to take a stronger diplomatic stand against the U.S. actions and to highlight the global repercussions of military strikes on sovereign states. As of Friday, the U.S. Embassy has not issued a formal response to the protesters’ demands, but security remains heightened around the diplomatic mission.
