Egypt and EU unite in urgent push to cement Gaza Truce

Top diplomats from Egypt and the European Union reached a critical consensus on Thursday, January 8, 2026, regarding the immediate necessity of transitioning into a “second phase” of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The agreement was reached during high-level political consultations in Cairo between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas, aimed at breaking the current deadlock in regional peace negotiations.

The meeting focused on the “how” and “why” of the escalating humanitarian crisis, with both parties stressing that a sustainable cessation of hostilities is the only way to prevent further regional instability. Under the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, the proposed second phase is designed to move beyond the temporary pause initiated in October toward a permanent end to the conflict. This phase calls for the establishment of a Board of Peace, an international body expected to be chaired by Trump and composed of 15 world leaders to supervise a new technocratic Palestinian government and oversee reconstruction. Egypt, acting as a primary mediator alongside the EU, emphasized that the current status quo is unsustainable for regional security and civilian survival.

The diplomatic push was executed through a series of bilateral discussions focused on harmonizing the international community’s approach to the conflict. By aligning the EU’s diplomatic weight with Egypt’s local mediation efforts, the two entities hope to pressure both Israel and Hamas into accepting more permanent terms, including the disarmament of militant groups and the lifting of Israeli restrictions on international NGOs. As of Friday, the parties are calling for an immediate international conference to formalize these steps, warning that any further delay in implementing the second phase could lead to an irreversible collapse of humanitarian conditions as displaced families struggle against a harsh winter.
