Aleppo evacuations expand as vicious clashes tear through Syrian Streets

Approximately 140,000 Syrian civilians are currently fleeing the city of Aleppo as of Friday, January 9, 2026, following a dramatic escalation in military hostilities and the rapid expansion of evacuation orders. The mass exodus was triggered by intensified clashes between Syrian government forces, operating under the administration of interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The fighting has shattered local truces and brought heavy shelling into the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zeid.

To escape the crossfire, residents are moving in massive waves toward the surrounding countryside and the northern Afrin district. This humanitarian crisis is being driven by a surge in airstrikes and ground combat following the failure of a March agreement intended to integrate the SDF into the national army by the end of 2025. Families were forced to navigate the chaos of expanding combat zones after the Syrian military issued a deadline for civilians to leave, declaring the contested districts “closed military areas” before launching “targeted operations.”

International aid agencies, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), are struggling to respond to the displacement as the sudden influx of people has overwhelmed mosques, churches, and collective centers. The situation remains critical as humanitarian workers call for the immediate establishment of safe corridors, warning that the lack of food and medical care, coupled with freezing winter temperatures, could lead to a catastrophic loss of life. In response to the crisis, the Syrian Defense Ministry announced a fragile ceasefire effective at 3:00 am on Friday January 9th to prevent further escalation within residential areas.
