National Students’ body declares nationwide protest against new tax laws

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has set 14 January 2026 as a National Day of Action to protest against the implementation of Nigeria’s newly introduced tax laws, warning the reforms could deepen economic hardship for students and millions of Nigerians.

In a statement issued by NANS President Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the student body expressed profound disappointment and a total lack of confidence in how the federal government and its advisers have handled the tax reform process. The group criticised the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) leadership particularly its chairman for poor stakeholder engagement and alleged failure to properly consult the public ahead of rollout.

NANS has urged all its structures including campus chapters and state coordinators to mobilise for peaceful, lawful protests nationwide, with Unity Fountain in Abuja designated as the major convergence point. The planned demonstrations are intended to highlight student concerns that the reforms, scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2026, were enacted without adequate transparency or broad public input.

The group’s stance has resonated with other civil society organisations and youth bodies that have also called for suspension or review of the laws pending fuller public consultation and clarity on their implications.
