Fresh overnight Russian strikes across multiple regions of Ukraine have killed at least five people and injured 30 others, according to Ukrainian officials, as the war continues to inflict heavy civilian and infrastructural damage.
Authorities said the attacks affected at least eight regions of the country, with the central city of Dnipro among the hardest hit.
Emergency services and rescue teams were deployed to several impacted areas on Saturday morning as officials assessed casualties and damage from the latest wave of aerial bombardment.
Dnipro Suffers Heavy Damage
According to Ukraine’s National Police, more than 20 people were wounded in Dnipro alone.
Among those injured were a nine-year-old child and two police officers, underscoring the continuing toll on both civilians and first responders.
Police said a rescue operation was underway at a residential building in the city after parts of the structure were damaged during the attack.
Images and video released by Ukrainian authorities showed emergency workers searching through debris, treating victims, and responding to damaged apartment blocks.
Dnipro, an important industrial and logistical centre in central Ukraine, has repeatedly come under missile and drone attack during the conflict.
Fatalities in Northern Region
In the northern Chernihiv Region, officials said two people were killed in the city of Nizhyn.
Emergency crews were also dispatched to the area as authorities continued to inspect damaged properties and support affected residents.
The strikes in northern Ukraine reflect the broad geographic spread of the latest Russian assault, with attacks reported far from front-line combat zones.
Children Among the Wounded
In Kharkiv Region, police said a one-year-old boy was among those wounded.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city and surrounding region, has remained a frequent target of missile, artillery, and drone attacks due to its proximity to the Russian border.
Officials said emergency teams were working in several locations across the region following the strikes.
Damage in Donetsk Region
Further east, in Donetsk Region, Governor Vadym Filashkin said one person was injured in attacks on Sloviansk and another in Kramatorsk.
He added that six homes, five high-rise buildings, and several public structures suffered damage.
Among the affected buildings were a post office and a church, highlighting the continued impact of the war on civilian infrastructure and community facilities.
Hundreds of Drones and Missiles Launched
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched a massive overnight barrage consisting of 619 drones and 47 missiles.
According to military officials, air defence systems intercepted, destroyed, or electronically suppressed 610 of the incoming aerial threats.
If confirmed, the figures would represent one of the largest combined drone-and-missile assaults in recent months.
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that Russia has intensified its use of drones in combination with cruise and ballistic missiles in an attempt to overwhelm air defence systems.
Zelenskyy Condemns Attacks
Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the latest strikes, saying Russian tactics remain focused on targeting civilian areas.
“Russia’s tactics remain unchanged attack drones, cruise missiles, and a significant number of ballistic missiles. Most targets are civilian infrastructure in cities,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
He also shared footage showing firefighters and rescue personnel responding to heavily damaged buildings.
The Ukrainian leader has consistently urged Western allies to provide more air defence systems, interceptor missiles, and military assistance to better protect cities from repeated attacks.
Recent Strike on Odesa
The latest bombardment follows another deadly strike a day earlier on the southern port city of Odesa.
Ukrainian authorities said a married couple, both aged 75, were killed in that attack.
Officials also reported damage to residential buildings and said a foreign commercial vessel was hit during the strike.
Odesa remains strategically important as a Black Sea port and has been repeatedly targeted throughout the war.
EU Tightens Pressure on Russia
The attacks come shortly after the European Union approved a new round of sanctions against Russia.
The measures reportedly target Russia’s energy, banking, and trade sectors as part of efforts to increase pressure on Moscow.
The package had previously faced delays due to opposition from Hungary, but was eventually approved this week.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc is continuing to push for additional sanctions.
Call for Faster Action
President Zelenskyy urged European leaders to accelerate implementation of new measures, arguing that delays give Russia time to adjust its economy and military logistics.
“The pause caused by the blocking of the 20th package gave the aggressor additional time to adapt,” he said.
War Shows No Sign of Easing
More than two years into the full-scale invasion, the conflict continues to devastate cities, displace civilians, and strain international diplomacy.
The latest attacks demonstrate Russia’s continued reliance on long-range strikes, while Ukraine remains dependent on foreign military support to defend its skies and infrastructure.
As rescue operations continue and damage assessments unfold, many Ukrainians once again face the aftermath of another night of destruction.
