Following the National Assembly’s joint committee approval of a sixth state in the South-East, public discourse has intensified regarding which Local Government Areas (LGAs) would form the new state and what it might be called. Six proposals have surfaced, spotlighting locales such as Orlu, Aba, Orashi, Adada, Etiti, and Anioma among frontrunners.
The proposals aim to balance ethnic, historical, and administrative factors. Some suggested names like Orlu State build on existing identity movements, while Anioma State draws on cross-zone cultural linkages. Observers note that boundary selection and name designation will require intense negotiation among state governments, traditional leadership, civil society and ethnic associations.
Analysts warn that unresolved anxieties over capital location, resource sharing, and legislative representation could complicate consensus. Still, the renewed momentum over the sixth state has injected energy into regional political dynamics as stakeholders await the subcommittee’s final recommendation.
