Six people, including four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), a soldier, and another passenger, have been confirmed dead in a tragic road accident on the Girei–Song Highway in Adamawa State.
The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday at about 1:50 p.m. near the Narehi axis in Girei Local Government Area and involved a military gun truck and a commercial Hummer bus. Eyewitnesses said the military vehicle was travelling from Gombi to Yola while the bus was heading from Yola to Mubi when the collision occurred.
According to reports, the impact caused the bus to overturn and immediately burst into flames, trapping all five passengers inside. The fire reportedly engulfed the vehicle before help could arrive, leaving no survivors among the occupants.
The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that all five passengers in the commercial bus were burnt beyond recognition. Police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Ngurore, said preliminary investigations revealed that four of the deceased were NYSC members serving in the state.
Two of the corps members have been identified as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State, while efforts are ongoing to confirm the identities of the remaining victims and notify their families.
He also confirmed that a soldier attached to the military vehicle died in the crash, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.
Emergency responders and police operatives were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident, where the burnt remains were evacuated and deposited at the Specialist Hospital in Yola for preservation and further investigation.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision, while efforts continue to reach the families of all victims involved in the tragic accident.
