The Benue State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby boy allegedly stolen from his mother shortly after delivery at the Divisional Hospital in Gboko Local Government Area.
The baby was reportedly taken in the early hours of Tuesday after a woman allegedly disguised herself as a nurse and collected the child from his mother under the pretext of providing further medical care.
Baby reunited with mother
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed on Thursday that the newborn had been recovered and reunited with his mother at the Police ‘A’ Division in Gboko.
He also disclosed that several suspects had been arrested over the incident.
According to Aondongu, some of the suspects are being detained in Gboko, while others have been transferred to the state Police Command headquarters in Makurdi.
He explained that the exact number of suspects in custody was yet to be confirmed, as the command was still awaiting additional information from the Gboko division.
Police operation leads to recovery
Residents of Gboko said the baby was recovered on Wednesday night during a police operation that resulted in the arrest of a suspected child trafficker in the Adekaa area of the town.
The suspect was reportedly tracked through intelligence after allegedly travelling by motorcycle from Tarka Local Government Area.
The recovery of the baby is expected to assist investigators in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and determining whether those arrested have links to other cases of missing children in the area.
The police have promised to provide further details as investigations continue.
