Tragedy in Plateau: 7 Miners Killed as Mining Pit Suddenly Collapses

Seven miners have reportedly died after a mining pit collapsed in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred around 7pm on Wednesday while the miners were working at the site, leaving several people trapped underground.

Residents Race to Rescue Trapped Miners

An eyewitness, Albert Danlami, described the incident as devastating, saying the pit suddenly caved in on the miners.

According to him, residents and other miners immediately rushed to the site and began efforts to rescue those trapped beneath the collapsed earth.

Despite the rescue efforts, seven miners were found dead.

The incident reportedly triggered panic in the community as residents gathered at the mining site following the collapse.

Community Leader Confirms Seven Deaths

Rwang Tengwong, Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the incident.

Tengwong said the seven victims were at the mining site when the pit collapsed, adding that efforts to rescue them were unsuccessful.

Reports indicate that several other miners sustained injuries in the incident.

Renewed Concerns Over Mining Safety

The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over the safety of mining operations in Plateau State.

Mining pit collapses have reportedly claimed numerous lives in mining communities across Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Riyom and other parts of the state.

The incident is likely to intensify calls for stricter enforcement of mining safety standards and improved monitoring of mining sites to prevent further loss of lives.
