TINUBU TO ADDRESS NATION AS NIGERIA MARKS DEMOCRACY DAY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to address Nigerians nationwide as the country commemorates the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, an annual event dedicated to reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey and honouring those who fought for the restoration of civilian rule.

The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that the nationwide broadcast would be transmitted at 7:00 a.m. through the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

According to the presidential aide, all television and radio stations across the country have been advised to connect to the official broadcast to enable citizens follow the President’s address simultaneously.

The Democracy Day speech is expected to focus on key national issues, including governance, security, economic reforms, democratic development, and the administration’s plans for addressing challenges facing the country. It is also expected to highlight the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s political history and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists who struggled for the return of democratic governance.

June 12 remains one of the most symbolic dates in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. The day commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in the nation’s history. The election, believed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, was annulled by the military government, triggering widespread protests and a prolonged struggle for democratic rule.

Since its official recognition as Democracy Day, June 12 has become a platform for national reflection on democratic values, constitutional governance, civil liberties, and the responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in sustaining democratic institutions.

This year’s celebration comes at a time when Nigerians continue to debate major national issues, including security challenges, economic reforms, constitutional amendments, and proposals for state police. Many citizens are expected to look to the President’s address for reassurance, policy direction, and updates on ongoing government efforts to improve living conditions and strengthen national unity.

Government officials say the Democracy Day commemoration is not only an opportunity to celebrate the country’s democratic achievements but also a moment to renew commitment to accountability, good governance, justice, and the rule of law.

As Nigerians mark another year of uninterrupted democratic governance, attention will be focused on the President’s message and the direction it provides for the nation amid evolving political, economic, and security realities.
