A heartbreaking incident has claimed the lives of a father and his teenage daughter after they fell into an abandoned well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The victims were identified as Abubakar Abdullahi, 45, and his 15-year-old daughter, Fiddausi.
According to the Kano State Fire Service, the tragedy unfolded on Tuesday evening when Fiddausi accidentally slipped into the abandoned well. In a desperate attempt to rescue his daughter, Abdullahi entered the well but also became trapped.
Emergency responders from the Tsanyawa Fire Service Branch rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call. However, rescue efforts were suspended due to darkness and the challenging conditions at the site.
By the early hours of Wednesday, a rescue team from the Fire Service Headquarters joined the operation and successfully recovered both victims from the well. Sadly, they were found unconscious and were later confirmed dead.
The remains of the father and daughter were handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial arrangements.
Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Fire Service extended its condolences to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to avoid attempting rescues in wells or other confined spaces without the necessary training and rescue equipment, warning that such situations can quickly become fatal.
The tragic incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by abandoned wells and the risks of carrying out rescue attempts without professional assistance.
