Civil Groups Demand Probe into Senate President

A coalition of civil society organizations has called for an immediate investigation into allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Ethics Committee Chairman Neda Imasuen.

The groups submitted a petition to the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), highlighting concerns over ethical and legal violations that threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

Among the allegations is a claim by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that Akpabio directed former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to orchestrate her assassination and recall from the Senate. Akpoti-Uduaghan also accused federal institutions of colluding in the alleged scheme.

Additionally, the coalition raised concerns over Imasuen’s past disbarment in New York for fraud, questioning his suitability to chair the Senate Committee on Ethics. They also condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension, calling it an abuse of power.

The groups urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the LPDC to take action while calling on the Senate to review the suspension. They also demanded an open investigation into the assassination claims and INEC’s role in processing a recall petition allegedly submitted by an unregistered group.

Akpabio’s spokesperson dismissed the allegations, stating that the senator must prove her claims. He added that Akpabio remains focused on governance and would not be distracted by political attacks.
