UAE AND US ENFORCE NEW VISA RESTRICTIONS FOR NIGERIANS

Just a day after the United States announced new visa limitations for Nigerian citizens, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also revised its visa policy, further tightening travel conditions for Nigerians.
Travel agencies confirmed on Wednesday July 9th that the UAE has now barred Nigerians from obtaining transit visas, while imposing stricter rules on tourist visa applicants. Nigerians aged 18 to 46 travelling solo are now ineligible for tourism visas, while those aged 45 and above must provide six months of bank statements reflecting at least $10,000 in monthly balances.
Simultaneously, the US Mission in Nigeria announced that, effective July 8, 2025, most non-immigrant visa categories will now be limited to a single entry with only a three-month validity period. Previously issued visas will remain valid until expiry.
Aviation analyst and travel ambassador Ikechi Uko described the US policy change as an opportunity for Nigeria to reform its outdated visa practices, advocating for reciprocity in access and duration.
“Our visa policy needs to reflect the reality of modern global travel. Countries like Ghana and Morocco are securing strategic travel agreements. Nigeria must do better,” Uko said.
