ADC warns FG against using Alleged Coup Plot to Silence Opposition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the Federal Government against using recent rumours of an alleged coup plot as a pretext to clamp down on opposition voices and civic freedoms.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Rex Oye, the ADC warned that Nigeria’s democracy was “too fragile to accommodate any abuse of power under the guise of national security.”

The statement emphasized that dissent and criticism are “core components of a democratic society” and urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to focus on governance rather than political suppression.

“The government must not exploit any alleged coup narrative to intimidate opposition parties, journalists, or activists. The right to free speech, peaceful protest, and political association must remain protected,” the party warned.

The ADC called for national dialogue, improved security, and inclusive governance to restore citizens’ trust and prevent further social tension.
