Maj‑Gen Adamu Laka, Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, reassured the public that the federal government remains committed to rescuing the remaining abducted Chibok girls and Leah Sharibu, eleven years after their kidnappings.
Addressing a Multi‑Agency Anti‑Kidnap Fusion Cell meeting in collaboration with the UK’s National Crime Agency, Maj‑Gen Laka confirmed that while some girls have escaped or been rescued gradually, 87 Chibok girls and 109 Dapchi schoolgirls—including Leah Sharibu—remain missing.
He recounted the intense rescue operations following the initial abduction in April 2014, emphasising that negotiation and military action have continued intermittently. “We haven’t given up hope… some were married into insurgent groups. But our focus remains,” Laka said.
He also reminded stakeholders that attention must extend beyond high‑profile cases to include the rescue of kidnapped humanitarian workers and other victims across the north-east region.
