Nigeria Signs MoU with Airbus to Strengthen Aviation Sector

The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus to boost the development of the country’s civil aviation and aerospace industry.

The agreement was concluded during a working visit by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France.

Under the partnership, Nigeria and Airbus will collaborate on improving aviation infrastructure, expanding technical capacity, and enhancing human capital development within the sector. The initiative is also expected to support training in aircraft maintenance, crew development, and aviation management.

Speaking at the signing, Keyamo described the agreement as a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem and aligning it with global standards.

Airbus officials said the partnership reflects Nigeria’s strategic importance in Africa’s aviation growth, noting its large population and expanding economy as key drivers of future demand.

The agreement also includes support for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities, aviation market intelligence, and exploration of sustainable aviation fuel development.

Nigeria’s delegation included senior officials from the aviation sector, among them the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

According to Airbus forecasts, Africa will require nearly 1,500 new aircraft by 2044, along with tens of thousands of pilots, engineers, and cabin crew to meet growing demand.

Officials say the partnership is expected to position Nigeria as a key aviation hub in Africa, while creating opportunities for job creation, skills development, and long-term sectoral growth.
