Egypt has begun rolling out a national “green label” certification for plastic products and packaging to promote sustainability and support the circular economy, the Ministry of Environment said.
The initiative, overseen by the Waste Management Regulatory Authority and supported by GIZ under the National Solid Waste Management Programme co-funded by Germany and the EU, will be implemented in coordination with key bodies including the Industrial Development Authority and the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality.
Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, said the label will encourage manufacturers to redesign products to be recyclable without affecting quality, helping to reduce plastic waste. The certification will apply to products that use recycled materials, are recyclable, or are biodegradable.
Nermine Abou El Atta, Adviser to the Minister of Industry, said the scheme supports Egypt’s readiness for the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), due to take effect in January 2026, and will strengthen the competitiveness of Egyptian exports.
The ministry said technical guidelines were issued in November 2024, followed by a packaging guide in November 2025, with the scheme to be introduced in phases to ease compliance.
