Former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State, Mathias Byuan, has officially joined the Labour Party and obtained the party’s governorship nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the 2027 elections.
Byuan picked up the forms at the Labour Party national secretariat in Abuja on Friday alongside other aspirants contesting for various elective positions, including seats in the National Assembly and the Benue State House of Assembly.
The former Executive Director of Housing, Finance and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority said his decision to contest under the Labour Party platform followed consultations with political associates and supporters across Benue State.
Despite defecting from the APC, Byuan declared support for the re-election bid of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, saying he believes the President’s Renewed Hope agenda should be sustained for another term.
According to him, the Tinubu administration has initiated critical projects and reforms that require continuity to achieve long-term national development.
Byuan stressed that his support for President Tinubu does not conflict with his new political affiliation, noting that governance and leadership should be assessed based on performance and policies rather than party lines alone.
The governorship aspirant also used the occasion to criticise the administration of Hyacinth Alia, alleging that Benue State continues to face serious challenges, including insecurity, labour disputes, poor infrastructure, and concerns over workers’ welfare.
He claimed that recurring security threats and salary-related grievances have contributed to growing dissatisfaction among residents and civil servants in the state.
Byuan pledged that if elected governor in 2027, his administration would prioritise security, healthcare, education, rural development, and prompt payment of workers’ salaries and pensions.
He also promised to focus on strengthening agricultural development and improving living conditions in rural communities across Benue State.
According to a statement issued by his adviser, Akange Nyagba, supporters and party members at the Labour Party secretariat expressed confidence in Byuan’s leadership credentials and welcomed his entrance into the governorship race.
Political observers say Byuan’s defection highlights the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in states where opposition parties are seeking to challenge incumbent administrations and expand their influence.
His move is also seen as part of wider efforts by politicians across party lines to reposition themselves ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship contest in Benue State.
