Gov Okpebholo signs new Laws to Protect Edo Assets, strengthen Judiciary

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has signed into law two key bills aimed at safeguarding state-owned assets and enhancing the capacity of the judiciary to ensure effective justice delivery.

The newly enacted laws, the Edo State Property Protection Law and the Edo State Judiciary Funds Management Law are designed to prevent encroachment on government lands and guarantee financial autonomy for the judiciary.

Governor Okpebholo, while signing the laws at the Government House in Benin City, said the move marks a major milestone in his administration’s drive to entrench transparency, protect public property, and promote judicial independence.

He emphasized that the property protection law will curb the menace of land grabbing and illegal sales of government lands, noting that such practices have hindered development and denied the state critical investment opportunities.

Under the new framework, anyone found guilty of encroaching or illegally acquiring public assets will face prosecution, while the judiciary’s fiscal autonomy is expected to accelerate case management, reduce delays, and improve access to justice.

The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to building strong institutions that ensure accountability, justice, and sustainable development across Edo State.
