Kebbi State assembly passes Senior Secondary Education Board Bill

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has passed a landmark bill establishing a Senior Secondary Education Board charged with overseeing quality control, administration, and supervision of senior secondary schools across the state.

The new law centralizes functions previously dispersed across ministries and bodies, granting the board authority over curriculum standards, examination oversight, teacher deployment, school inspections, and certification. Proponents argue that this structural reform will reduce overlap, bolster accountability, and improve educational outcomes.

During floor debates, lawmakers cited deficiencies in oversight, delayed exam results, and inconsistent standards across districts as key challenges driving the reform. The Governor is expected to assent to the bill shortly, and implementation committees have already been constituted.

Education stakeholders—including teachers, principals, and civil society advocates—welcomed the bill, calling it a bold move to elevate secondary education in Kebbi. They pledged to work with the board to ensure smooth transition, capacity building, and stakeholder buy-in.
