A coalition of Northern youth organizations has issued a blunt admonition to political figures like Atiku Abubakar and Omoyele Sowore, urging them to desist from politicizing the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu for electoral or sectional mobilization.
In a communique circulated across media outlets, the group said that while advocacy for Kanu’s rights is valid, framing his detention as a platform for sectional advantage only deepens national divides. They emphasized that justice should be based on the rule of law, not political expediency.
The statement condemned recent speeches and campaigns that spotlight Kanu’s detention in singular terms, arguing that such narratives risk inflaming tensions and prolonging grievance cycles. Rather than symbolic commentary, the coalition urged legal actors, civil society, and stakeholders to focus on due process, transparent trials, and reconciliation across ethnic lines.
The group also challenged political actors to broaden their messaging to address broader national concerns — including security, economic inclusion, and good governance — rather than focusing disproportionately on identity-based issues.
