NANS Urges Federal Government to Protect Nigerian Students in South Africa

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)

The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to protect Nigerian students residing in South Africa amid renewed concerns over xenophobic tensions.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Vice President for External Affairs, Aneke Kenechukwu, the association described the situation as a disturbing trend of hostility and targeted attacks against foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians and other Africans.
NANS warned that the growing tension poses a serious threat to lives and undermines the ideals of African unity and regional cooperation.

The group said many Nigerian students in South Africa are now living in fear and uncertainty, stressing that their protection should be treated as a national priority.

It urged the Nigerian government to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels and obtain firm guarantees for the safety of citizens, especially students.

The association also called for support measures for affected students, including temporary shelters, emergency hotlines and financial assistance where necessary.

In addition, NANS recommended that the government develop an evacuation plan for Nigerian students who may wish to return home.

The group further called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government, Nigerian diplomatic missions, student bodies and international partners to ensure no Nigerian student is left vulnerable.

Recent reports indicate that two Nigerian citizens have died in the latest wave of violence in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to South Africa has said the situation is under control, while Cyril Ramaphosa has urged foreign nationals to respect local laws and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to human rights.
