The National Council of State has unanimously approved the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name to the council during its meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following the exit of former INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 to 2025.
President Tinubu described Amupitan as “a man of integrity and deep intellect”, noting that his apolitical background and strong legal expertise make him well-suited for the role.
Council members, including Governors and former Heads of State, endorsed the nomination unanimously.
Born in 1967 in Kogi State, Professor Amupitan is a distinguished legal scholar specializing in Company Law, Evidence Law, and Corporate Governance. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 2014, he currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
His nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
