Nigeria’s weightlifting team has delivered a dominant performance at the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Ismailia, Egypt, securing a total of 29 medals in one of its strongest continental outings in recent years.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) praised the athletes for what it described as a landmark achievement that reflects the country’s growing strength in international sports. Chairman of the Commission, Shehu Dikko, said the performance showed discipline, resilience, and steady progress in Nigeria’s sporting development.
The Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, also commended the team, noting that the result highlights the impact of sustained investment and preparation behind the scenes.
Nigeria finished the championship with 14 gold, 13 silver, and 2 bronze medals, marking a strong overall medal haul across both men’s and women’s events.
In the women’s category, Nigeria placed third overall, powered by standout performances from athletes including Commonwealth champion Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who continued her dominance in the 58kg division with three gold medals. Ruth Asuquo Nyong and Onome Omolola Didih also contributed multiple gold medals in their respective weight classes.
Other strong performances came from Liadi Taiwo in the 77kg category, while Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele and Mary Osijo secured silver medals in highly competitive events.
In the men’s events, Favour Omovigho Agboro and Edidiong Joseph Umoafia both claimed multiple medals, while Adedapo Adeleke Opadeji added three silver medals. Lucky Joseph rounded off the campaign with two bronze medals in the super-heavyweight category.
Officials say the results reinforce Nigeria’s position as a rising force in African weightlifting and a growing contender on the global stage, as attention now turns to future international competitions and qualification pathways for world events.
