Pope Leo XIV renews appeal for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Corridors in Sudan

Pope Leo XIV reiterated a global appeal for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and the establishment of humanitarian corridors on Sunday November 2nd, urging warring parties to allow unfettered access for aid convoys and protect civilians amid escalating fighting. The Pope’s call comes as violence continues to displace large numbers of people and strain humanitarian operations.

Addressing the situation in Sudan, the Pope appealed to international and local leaders to prioritise the protection of non-combatants, facilitate humanitarian relief, and pursue negotiations to end the hostilities. He emphasised the urgent need to safeguard hospitals, schools and refugee-hosting communities from attacks.

The Vatican’s message accompanied growing alarm from humanitarian agencies that access to some of Sudan’s hardest-hit areas remains blocked and that large numbers of displaced people are at risk from hunger, disease and exposure as temperatures fall. The Pope urged faith and political leaders to work together to open safe corridors and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law.

United Nations and regional mediators have also pressed for pauses in fighting to allow for aid delivery; the Pope’s intervention adds moral pressure on combatants to yield to humanitarian imperatives.
