President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to make a state visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026, his office confirmed on Friday. The visit comes amid on-going diplomatic engagements and economic discussions between Nigeria and the UK, and is expected to focus on trade, investment, security cooperation, and climate-related initiatives.
According to a statement from the Presidency, President Tinubu will meet with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and other senior government officials in London to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss strategies to expand economic partnerships, particularly in the energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and technology sectors. The visit will also include engagements with Nigerian diaspora communities in the United Kingdom as well as meetings with British business leaders and investors.
Presidential sources said discussions will cover bilateral security cooperation, including counterterrorism efforts, cyber-security, intelligence sharing, and maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. Both countries have expressed shared concerns over regional instability in West Africa and the need for deeper collaboration to address transnational threats.
President Tinubu is expected to be accompanied by senior members of his cabinet, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and other top government officials involved in finance, defence, and trade. Delegations from Nigeria’s private sector are also expected to participate in investment-focused meetings aimed at attracting British capital into key sectors of the Nigerian economy.
UK officials have indicated that the visit will provide an opportunity to advance cooperation on climate finance, renewable energy projects, education partnerships, and migration-related issues, including visa facilitation for skilled workers and business travellers. Analysts say the trip could help reset and deepen Nigeria–UK relations amid shifting global economic and geopolitical dynamics.
State visits typically involve official ceremonies, bilateral talks, policy dialogues, and joint press engagements. Observers expect the visit to yield agreements, memoranda of understanding, or investment commitments designed to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties between both countries.
The Presidency said a detailed programme of events will be released closer to the date of the visit, as public and diplomatic interest grows around the potential outcomes of the trip.
