President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s women football champions, the Super Falcons, with the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honours, alongside a cash reward of $100,000 each and a plot of land with a house in the Federal Capital Territory.
The reward was announced at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the team was officially received after their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The President praised the athletes for making the country proud and for their discipline, resilience, and patriotism throughout the competition.
Each player, coach, and technical team member was conferred with the OON title. Tinubu said the gesture was not only a celebration of their sporting achievement but also a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to recognising and empowering women in sports.
This development has been widely applauded by sports stakeholders, with many noting that such gestures from the presidency signal a renewed national interest in promoting women’s football and motivating athletes to do more for the country.
